I think it means that something good was created, but was tainted quickly, or an idea was conceptualized, but cast aside. To grow an orchard filled with broken portraits, by my guess, means that someone has a collection of such ideas, but they've all become broken because they're afraid to visualize them completely. To the singer, life is scary, and he's so obsessed with fear of dying and fear of surviving, that he's forgotten how to live.10 years ago
