Whereas the choruses extol Bangkok's reputation and exciting atmosphere, the American's verses denounce the city, including its red-light district, "muddy old river" and "reclining Buddha".

The main song has a pop styling, whose lyrics sarcastically juxtapose the Thai capital city and its nightlife with the game of chess. In the original concept album for the musical, the choruses are sung by Swedish artist Anders Glenmark (and by a musical ensemble in the staged versions), while the verses are a rap originally performed by Murray Head as the American chess grandmaster (a character known as Frederick "Freddie" Trumper in the staged versions).

It's not about prostitutes you moron. It's about a chess tournament in Bangkok. The guy singing is ignoring the rest of the town, and the background singers are singing about the actual town while the main singer doesn't give a crap. If you watch the video for the original version, all the guy is focusing on is the chess board, and he becomes one of the chess pieces. Besides, a song about prostitutes would never make it on the radio. Duh. Seriously, you all have dirty minds

@txmeerkat How can you be sharp enough to know where the song is but not get the clear reference to transvestite prostitutes?

No. Just, no. As the incarnated musical fan I am, this is blasphemy. Nothing more, nothing less.

This song is about chess. It's also about prostitutes. Ha, Maybe even transvestite prostitutes. "If your lucky then the gods a she". It is a great song though and I love the beat.
