No way Maiden ripped off this song. Samson's "Head On" was released in 1980, and Iron Maiden played "The Ides of March" song in a gig at Ruskin Arms, London in october, 1979. That song was actually wrote in 1977 by Steve Harris probably along with Barry Purkis (Thunderstick) while he was a member of Iron Maiden, for a brief period. Then he left and joined Samson in 79, replacing their old drummer Clive Burr, who would eventually join Iron Maiden. Later on Barry used that song as "Thunderburst" in 1980 "Head On", giving co-credit to Harris and curiously to Bruce Dickinson and other members of Samson. Steve Harris in turn released it in the 1981 "Killers" album as the famous intro "The Ides of March", but only gave credit to himself. In my opinion the Maiden version is much better, the solos by Murray and Smith are great.

This is a ripoff of the Iron Maiden song. The drummer used to play in Maiden and Ides was played during the 70s. Thunderstick was actually called into a meeting with Maiden and was told he would get 50% royalties on this version and 0% on the Maiden version. All they have done is tag on a stupid acoustic intro and reversed the scale direction of the harmony guitar. That being said, this is a really cool version and the vibe reminds me of Strange World (which I love). The whole album is pretty good.

Yes, writing phantom of the opera clearly shows lack of creativity. Like i told before, Maiden used Ides of March as intro LIVE in 1979. Before Head On was recorded. Before!

Written with members that at the time were in maiden, both bands had the rights, so you're a dumbass

LMAo. Maiden's version? Orignal requires creativity which maiden guys don't have

Who told you this? Mr. Harris? Just to hide the fact that they have stolen many stuff from other bands?

When maiden fans are going to accept that maiden is just an average metal band with lots of stolen stuff.

Do you know that Wrathchild, Another Life, Innocent Exile, Drifter and the Ides of March as intro were part of Maiden live set in 1979? 1979 was their first full UK tour. Killers was played live in 1980. Thunderstick was Maiden's drummer before Clive. Steve did not write this song with Samson, Steve is credited in their 1980 Head on album. This is not competition or copying, its the same song. Samson only recorded it first; Steve couldn't record a song Maiden played live before 1980? LOL

I guess I see why Harris gets sole credit for the Iron Maiden version. He left quite a bit out from the original.

Harris co-wrote this song. It's not stolen, it's used (legally and ethically) by both bands.

Let's not throw stones. We're all fans, we're all brothers (and sisters) of Rock'n'Roll....so what if it was written before this, it was still a joint collaboration between members of both bands. Samson did first--and it's amazing--Maiden did it second and did it better. Not saying it IS better--by fact--but I think this version HAD to come first, in order for Maiden's version to come out. Could have been competition--don't know that for sure--but there's nothing wrong with competition in R'n'R.
