@Asif preamps are a big deal as well. I use this plugin that helps called AVOX Warm that helps liven up a dull preamp sound with some saturation. There a demo on their site that's free

Great vid. One of my favorite mixing vids, if you guys are interested is Rob Williams 7 steps to a fatter, louder mix. I have no idea who the dude is but you can check out the difference it made on my song "Come with Me". Give it a listen, then listen to the REMASTERED version after using his techniques. Seriously, it could GREATLY improve your home recordings!

I actually happened upon this delay technique by accident. Was messing with the EQ of the stereo delay, and came to the same conclusion, that lopping off some of the highs in the delay gave it more warmth and less prominence in the mix.
