Horatio Spafford was the modern equivalent of Job. A close front of Dwight Moody, founder of Moody Bible Institute, Mr. Spafford gained his renown in the greater Chicago area as a prominent lawyer. His luck ran out in 1870 when his only son died from the Scarlet Fever. Next Spring, he invested the majority of his wealth into real estate that was entirely destroyed during the Great Fire of Chicago in October 1871. Upon hearing that his friend Mr. Moody would be preaching in England, Mr. Spafford thought it would be a good idea to send his wife and four daughters on vacation to recover from the family's recent losses. Mr. Spafford was delayed on account of business. While crossing the Atlantic their iron steamship (Ville du Havre) collided with an iron clipper (Loch Earn). It sank in 12 minutes with the loss of 226 lives, including all four of Mr. Spafford's daughters. His wife telegraphed home "saved alone."According to a daughter born after the tragedy, while following the same route across the Atlantic Mr. Spafford wrote "It Is Well With My Soul."
