At jnet, even though the guys of sublime are only like 3 years age difference than the guys of 311, I always felt sublime was comprised from a whole generation before 311, the band members had that old school 70's and 80's mentality of a band and music influence, 311's music is less directly influenced by anything previously done, they more or less defined a genre of their own from scratch.

Not true man im 16, my dad took me to my first concert to see kiss 4 years ago, then my second to 311, now we go yearly. My whole phone is just filled with this music, i hate the new generation music besides Mumford and Sons. And their concerts are AWESOME!!!!

I personally don't feel like Sublime and 311 have anything in common, except maybe the reggae influence. Totally different sounds. Love them both but I prefer 311 and their complexity over Sublime any ole day. Plus Bradley is gone and Rome just doesn't really do it for me ( even though he is good).

I was 11 years old, 1995, when I heard my first 311 song ( Down, I believe). Love the older material too. Music is my second to most favorite album of theirs, following Transistor. But I'm a fan for life! PLUR

@parrrtypants "easy listening version of Sublime" - I'm not here to argue, but I find this strange. 311 has the same head-mashing punkrock sections, same Latin stylings, and same laid-back and relaxed songs that Sublime does. The difference is that I think Nick crafts his lyrics better, and more poetically than Bradley's lyrics - which seemed more like hiphop in their content. I guess in this way 311 is more relaxed, but I don't think that makes them any more easy to listen to or decipher.

I love this band, and especially love this song. I can relate to it - I think he means that he is the Jack, and even though he's usually down on his luck, there's hope out there that someday he'll be on top.

to the comment about the radio exposure; for the first like, 8 years 311 was on the scene, they played them on the radio so fucking much, that i got sick of them, and only now have been able to start listening to them again. to me THAT is weird. they used to get toooooo muuuuuch radio play, and now you never hear it any more. what is up with that? dont get me wrong, i love 311, but to me they will always be the "easy listening" version of sublime. maybe thats because im 34 i cant say why....
