i dont know how anyone can listen to this song and not hear that it's entirely about colin farrell; well maybe not just colin but jared coming to terms with what they maybe had and what it maybe meant to him. A Beautiful Lie is overflowing with references to finding one's self and coming to terms with who you really are. Interesting to note it was written around the time Jared was 35 yrs old, which is not really an age where you're just finding who you are; it would make sense that you are possibly really finding who you are, at age 35, if that something monumental happened in your life that suddenly changed how you saw things, and most importantly yourself. not only was this song written just following filming alexander - every lyric is a complete allusion to whatever happened between them, whatever that was exactly. "a modern myth" - the film mentions myths in nearly every scene and most importantly the myths of alexander the great and the one man who could always defeat him, emotionally and sexually, Hephaistion, whom Jared Leto portrayed, "modern" being an updated take on how we define something - in this instance, love; "the secret is out" - both men and the film were plagued with rumors of their on-set hookups, "out" relating directly to being pulled out of the closet; "to buy the truth and sell a lie" - regarding publicity and fighting the magazines over publishing stories that would for sure jeopardize their growing careers - you can "buy" your truth back if you give into additional interviews or stories, where you can promote some other distraction i.e. hookups with pretty young ladies, or "sell a lie"; and then the repeated "goodbye"s - i think it's clear Jared was trying to say good-bye, and publicly, knowing whatever happened then could not possibly continue with where their careers and public lives were going. obvs, no one will know what really went on - and i'm not calling either one gay as i don't have that evidence - but sometimes in life you end up having a connection with someone that kind of goes beyond gender-defined roles, your sexuality, who you always thought you were. I think it's pretty obvious too that over the last few years in particular, Leto's public personality and how he chooses to be perceived has evolved considerably from who he was even in 2007, 2009, 2011. He's still lusted after by millions of women, and yet his behavior and affectations and little quirks are considerably much more femme now than they ever were. I'd say the major change really began in 2012. I think ultimately, as he's even said, he doesn't believe in labels for people and with the year he's had in 2014 so far, it seems he's relaxed a lot in maybe trying to fit himself into the public (through his style, his performance, his roles), and has carved himself a little niche of whatever the fuck he wants to be within his life in the public. He seems considerably much more free to be himself now than ever - which is gorgeous and breathtaking to see. Can't wait for 2015 and everything else to follow.
