The Huckle-Buck (Alfred-Gibson) by Frank Sinatra with the Ken Lane Quintet, orchestra conducted by Axel Stordahl (CD audio source)

Amazingly, between mid-1947 (3 years before Mitch Miller) and early 1954, Sinatra saw only one (1) of his records reach the top 10 of Billboard's weekly best-selling singles charts. And it was this posted track...his version of the Paul Williams R&B hit "The Huckle-Buck," also covered successfully by Frank's old bandleader boss Tommy Dorsey.

This was one of 2 songs recorded by Frank on the evening of April 10, 1949. At 1:35, tenor saxophonist Herbie Haymer takes a brief R&B inspired solo (sounds a bit like Illinois Jacquet). Several hours later, on the way home from the studio, Haymer was killed in an auto accident, by a drunk driver, in Santa Monica. Yet another reminder to savor every moment, because it could all be gone in an instant...

An excellent take on the song! Probably my favorite now.
