I haven't had a drink of alcohol in over 26 years and I do it one day at a time.

Verse 1

D A E

Well you know, I was always the first to arrive at the party,

D A E

Ooh... and the last to leave the scene of the crime.

D F#m

Well it started with a couple of beers,

D F#

And it went I don't know how many years,

D E A

Like a runaway train headed for the end of the line.

Verse 2

D A E

Well I finally got around to admit that I might have a problem.

D A E

But I thought it was just too damn big of a mountain to climb.

D F#m

Well I got down on my knees and said "Hey!

D F#

I just can't go on living this way!"

D E A

Guess I have to learn to live my life one day at a time.

Bridge

C - G D - G E A

Oh yeah! One day at a time!

C - G D - G E A

Oh yeah! One day at a time!

Guitar Solo over verse chords

Bridge, repeated 2:23

Verse 3

D A E

Well I finally got around to admit that I was a problem.

D A E

When I used to put the blame on everybody's shoulders but mine.

D F#m

All the friends I used to run with are gone,

D F#

Lord, I hadn't planned on livin' this long.

D E A

But I finally learned to live my life one day at a time! 2:54

Coda

D F#m

It was something I was too blind to see,

D F#

I got help from something greater than me...

D E A

And today I learned to live my life one day at a time! 3:18

Love this song and love Joe and his music. So pleased for him and all you folks around the World who have listened to his words and found meaning and peace in their lives. Been learning guitar myself for a couple of years now ( I am 64 now!) and it is a slow process but I am determined to play this song, so thanks George for the video and tabs to help me. One question what strumming pattern(s) do you use.Cheers to all out there. Tony (Alsager, Cheshire. U.K.)

When I heard this song for the first time, I knew I had to cover it. You may also want to listen to my cover of "That's Why I'm Here" from Kenny Chesney, another great recovery song. Thanks for your kind comment and keep doing it like Joe says.
