It's just clicked with me what this song is actually about. (I think!) This jaded old guy in the humdrum days of "Now" feels like everything's gone wrong and he remembers the incredible thrills of his first love as a teenager. Facing ruin, he's about to top himself when suddenly he becomes financially rich, which he then cynically equates with the thrill of that love which he had before...Profound stuff for a pop song when you think about it, and the guys were all so young, too.

Saw them in 76 or 77 at the Odeon Hammersmith. Most underrrated band of all time in my opinion. Great vocals, tunes, clever time changes and playing. Saw them again about 3 years ago in Leuven, Belgium. Only Graham Gouldman from Mk 1 and Rick Fenn from Mark 2.
