To think of my task is chilling

To know I was carefully building the mask

I was wearing for two years, swearing I'd tear it off

I've sat in the dark explaining to myself

that I'm straining too hard for feelings I ought to find easily

Called myself Jezebel, I don't believe

Before I say that the vows we made weigh like a stone in my heart

Family is family, don't let this tear us apart

You lie there, an innocent baby

I feel like the thief who is raiding your home

entering and breaking and taking in every room

I know your feelings are tender and that inside you the embersstill glow

But I'm a shadow, I'm only a bed of blackened coal

Call myself Jezebel for wanting to leave

I'm not saying I'm replacing love for some other word

to describe the sacred tie that bound me to you

I'm just saying we've mistaken one for thousands of words

And for that mistake, I've caused you such pain that I damn that word

I've no more ways to hide that I'm a desolate and empty, hollow place inside

I'm not saying I'm replacing love for some other word

to describe the sacred tie that bound me to you

I'm not saying love's a plaything

No, it's a powerful word

inspired by strong desire to bind myself to you

How I wish that we never had tried to be man and his wife

to weave our lives into a blindfold over both our eyes

I've heard this song 10,000 times, and have never paid attention to the lyrics. Holy cow - I was missing out...

I've always felt that the lyrics to this song was very moving. A song about good intentions which ultimately backfire because the person (or people) aren't honest with their true feelings.

isn't it awesome!? i love it when the song speeds up like that and even the lyrics she sings are so powerful at that point.

This and Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" are the only songs I can think of that can make me cry. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I do, at least, know that this song is absolutely gorgeous.

She and Michael Stipe need to collaborate on an album (!), now that R.E.M. is no more...

One of my all time favorites ...I wore out this cd purchasing up to three of the same released in the 1990's. She and Michael Stipe -Rem were the hottest bands taking the world by storm. I loved all 10,000 Maniacs. Her voice is awesome.

The first version I heard of this song was from the Unplugged album, which made me think, "oh yeah, that's a sad song, whatever". Then I bought Our Time in Eden and heard this version. That drum crack at 1:02 just about split me in half; almost like Natalie had slapped my face and demanded that I listen to what she had to say next. This song just freezes my blood every time I hear it.

Thanks for uploading this amazing song. I LOVE how it goes from slow to intense, slow to intense, repeatedly. One of their best songs, and that is saying a lot as far as I'm concerned.
