*10,000 MANIACS - Dust Bowl Days*To continue in the gritty, real world vein of systemic poverty, depression and the wrath of mother earth... I'm digging up this obscure alternative classic. Many know who Natalie Merchant the solo artist is (or at least recognize her voice), but most are not familiar with her original band 10,000 Maniacs and their penchant for melancholic introspective dialogues and earthy, bittersweet revelations... Dust Bowl days being a good helping of both. While Wikipedia can give you a textual account of what the Dust Bowl was in the 30's, only a song like this can give you the personal perspective of what tens of thousands of families suffered through in Midwest America at that time.Excerpt:I should know to leave them homeThey follow me through the store with these toys I can't affordKids, take them back, you know better than thatDolls that talk, astronauts, t.v. games, airplanesThey don't understand and how can I explain?Saying no to a child for life lesson reasons is one thing. However not being able to buy a well deserved toy because you simply cant afford it or scrambling to find a home remedy because you couldn't afford a doctors visit is a totally different situation. If you're a parent that lives paycheck to paycheck, you've felt that guilty heart pain at least once I'm sure. This song hones in on that from a historical perspective and layers it on thick; husband gone (or dead), crops and livestock sold (or dead), children starving and yet another sunrise that's sure to turn into a dry (and dead) day deprived of rain or reprieve.
