Lou Reed Berlin Live at St. Anns Warehouse

Berlin: Live At St. Ann's Warehouse is the audio release of Reed's 2006 performances of his classic Berlin album from 1973. Its release coincides with the Weinstein Company's DVD release of the Julian Schnabel film made from these performances, Lou Reed's Berlin. Upon the 1973 release of Berlin, Lou Reed's controversial successor to the wildly popular Transformer, Rolling Stone's Stephen Davis described it as one of "certain records so patently offensive that one wishes to take some kind of physical vengeance on the artists that perpetrate them...a distorted and degenerate demimonde of paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide." A earnest pan, yes, but also a fabulous pull quote. Thirty years later, the magazine named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Staging Berlin had been discussed for over 30 years, and in December of 2006 it became a reality, over four days at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. It was the first time Reed performed the album live. The New York Times said that Reed "wasn't revisiting these songs as oldies or artifacts; he was reinhabiting them...Berlin carried Reed's music to an ornate extreme, but now its trappings are secondary. What comes through is the way it feels." The film Berlin, by acclaimed painter-turned-director Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly), documents these historic performances. Though the album's harrowing qualities are well documented, the experience of seeing and hearing it brought to life was invigorating. More information about the film can be found at http://www.berlinthefilm.com/. Produced by Bob Ezrin and Hal Willner, and featuring musicians like Fernando Saunders, Antony, Steve Hunter, Rob Wassermann, Rupert Christie and Sharon Jones, a seven piece orchestra (including Eyvind Kang and Jane Scarpantoni), and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, this recording magnifies the cinematic quality of the original album. It also includes the three encores, "Candy Says," "Rock Minuet," and "Sweet Jane." Berlin remains one of the most alarming and frank highlights of a career marked by innovation and candor. Just as Schnabel's effort is far more ambitious than your average concert film, this release stands as a majestic and poignant re-imagining of one of the 20th century's most powerful works.

I'd like to take issue with Marcia's simplistic suggestion that – in this most tender and poetic of songs – Lou Reed is singing "about people who should never have had children". It's certainly true that the album centres around the disjointed and ultimately tragic relationship between Jim & Caroline, but I think Lou is more sympathetic to them than you give him credit for. Lou was not a moraliser, quite the opposite, but he does tell a great story. The implication is that it's Jim who paints Caroline as "not a good mother" and a "miserable rotten slut" – they are Jims subjective slurs only. I'm pretty sure Lou would have preferred you keep your opinions about parenting education to yourself, because they certainly don't belong here.

This song speaks of too many children born to people who never should have had children. We don't ask ourselves, "Am I parent material"? We don't teach parenting education and demand exams for this career. We have to pass a test to get a drivers permit but not raise a human.

"Berlin" is one of the most beautiful rockrecords ever made. It pierces to the very marrow. I can only stand the record when I am gay. If I should be sad and listen to this I could take a rope & hang myself. I was lucky to see the 'Berlin' show twice. First in Amsterdam, a year later in Brussels. It made my flesh creep, especially with this song.

Lou has said tha an album is just a bunch of songs and you move on. I think he was being slightly disingenuous with that. He's feeling that song here. Maybe he wouldn't admit tha to anyone. Oh well, that's Lou and that's ok.

This is my favorite version of my favorite song in the world! It always makes me sad to remember that I was working a few blocks away in downtown Brooklyn when this concert was going on. It sucks to be broke!!
