He chooses maid instead of woman or wife quite intentionally. This is a love song for all woman, couched in a sentiment that is intentionally chauvinist. Even in mans loneliness he doesn't pine for a partner. He isn't capable of speaking in those terms. He aches for woman, but just the job she does for him.

Here's my take on this song. This song is an old man's lament for his lost life partner. The line "When will I see you again" is in heaven. My father in-law is 79 years old, and lost his wife 7 years ago, and now his life is in shambles, his trailer is a complete mess, rotten food in the fridge, car dinged up, unkempt old man. All he needs is a maid.
