Lets put it out there that this kid was born with talent, like few others.. and stevie would have wanted this. JM feels the notes flowing through him almost like SRV is just feeding them to him straight from heaven. If you don't shake or tremble with cold chills to this, you might need to listen to more stevie

This would probably have been right before or just after our friend Al Ferrante was his guitar teacher. I remember Al talking about this amazing student he had, but at the time never would have thought he was talking about a guitar legend in the making. Awesome listen! Between his guitar skills and his soul searching songwriting, he's one in a million and always will be one of my favorite musicians. Thanks for posting.

Man! This guy is almost as good as Lil' Wayne. He just needs to work on the signature Weezy double stop, and the Cash Money- double note bends, and he will be good enough to be called legendary. Lol, Just jokes. I have began to personally dislike John Mayer, but I can't deny this guy can play.

He sat for hours and learned how to play like B.B., SRV, Albert King, Jimi, etc. etc. He mimics them in his playing because they are his heroes. He synthesizes SRV and B.B. all in one solo and its amazing. You hear him paying homage a lot more when he plays straight blues music. But, listen to solos on Gravity, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, I Don't Trust Myself with Loving You (all live of course) and he has a style of his own. He knows the exact right notes to choose to evoke emotion, not just shred up and down the neck. He also infuses jazz stylings into his playing quite frequently. Listen to him play his solo on Sweet Home Chicago at Crossroads, he blows almost everyone out of the water. The man has an incredible ear and soul for music, his musicality is not a learned behavior, but one he clearly was born with.

the kid was 17, how can anybody talk shit about this incredible guitar work. even if he is "ripping off stevie" it would take anybody a lifetime of practice to sound anywhere near this good. Plus john mayer has now taken stevie and many other styles and molded them into his own style and sound which is unique and all his own.

It's funny how the internet is. If John Mayer had 17 today and this happened to show up on youtube, people would be like "Meh, SRV is better" and shit. Back then when we didn't have youtube or anything like it, people knew how to appreciate a guitar player. I'm not a fan of John Mayer's work whatsoever, but anyone who refuses to recognize him as a good guitar player is an asshole. No one will ever be like Jimi or SRV, but there are a LOT of good guitar layers out there and JM is one of them. As always, haters gonna hate.

effectively what your saying is he listened to someone who inspired him and got caught up in all the trappings pretty much all of us do when he was 17. hes still pulling off some technique that guitar players who've been playing more than 17 years struggle with. the kid is gifted then and now. he's earned the right for someone to say so without assholes critiquing him
