John Frusciante - An Exercise

Album: The Will To Death (2004)

The Will to Death is the fifth studio album by John Frusciante, released on June 22, 2004 on Record Collection. The album reached #36 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Frequent collaborator Josh Klinghoffer appears, performing drums, bass, and keyboard.

In 2004 Frusciante announced that he would produce six albums during a six month break from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with The Will to Death being the first of these. Following the long and costly recording of his previous album, Shadows Collide With People, Frusciante decided to experiment with recording music quickly and in a minimalist fashion, performing a maximum of two takes per track.

Frusciante has stated that the album is intended to be "the opposite of Shadows Collide With People": "On The Will to Death, I thought it would be a good idea to make a record with very little backing vocals, because we'd done it so much on Shadows. I always have to have a new idea for each album. For The Will to Death, the idea was to have very little backing vocals. There's a lot of other huge differences. In every way, I wanted the opposite of Shadows. "

Lyrics:

Learning there's nothing to gain from advice (ooh ooh)

Hey doubt, come on around any time (ooh ooh)

Anyhow mistakes are what lead you through life

Down and out's only if you think up and in's right

I've gone along with the sins that are versions of you (ooh ooh)

But guidelines were all I had time to get through (ooh ooh)

It's like reading of love that's gone wrong

If time was laid out like that everything would occur at once

And all the laws were laid down twice

And the clouds were doubled in the sky-ah-ah

And being tall meant lacking height (ooh ooh)

And being wrong meant being ri-i-i-ght (ooh ooh)

You're perfect, You fit snuggly right in the lie(ooh ooh)

One host is going to teach you how to die (ooh ooh)

Lay down the darkness tonight is so bright

Reasons, there's one for each time cars colide

I hear that telling moments divide (ooh ooh)

And the only important moments are there in between times(ooh ooh)

And being confused is an exercise(ooh ooh)

I'm missing your thoughts tonight

But we reach out to what's out of our sight

I'm missing your thoughts tonight

But we reach out to what's out of our sight
