Genre in music has come to mean something much different than what it does in film or literature. In music, genre is a marketing tool. Since "disco" genre is not much more than words to slap on a CD, an iTunes field, or a music bin to suggest a particular demographic is going to listen to that music. "Indie" tells me nothing about the music. It just tells me what kind of people are listening. DIY is not a style.

youre kinda right, but the word indie has taken on a whole new meaning, so its not wrong to say that it is a genre and a style.

Well, now-a-days you really do have to think of them as two separate things. There is the 'Indie' genre (which gets mixed up with Hipster) which includes fashion and music. BUT the original meaning for 'indie' was perfectly described by @soldat182. The thing is both exist and both are valid, so don't shoot someone down for calling this music genre Indie.

i always wish i have enough time to explain the type of music i listen to, but i instead have to resort to saying 'indie'. either that or i ramble on about bands that the person i'm talking to hasn't heard of, leading to them looking at me like i'm pretentious :/

yuck is a great band for sure, but all there songs are in the G C chord formation, or C F, E A, F Bb etc etc, all u have to do is use those chords and anyone can easily make a masterpiece

Stop living in the fucking 80s. "Indie" has referred to a genre for more than ten years now. It means something different in Europe than in North Amerca but it's not "wrong", it's the modern use of the word. Nobody uses "indie" in place of "independent" anymore and they haven't for a very long time.
