A demo song by Pete Townshend from his 1983 compilation Scoop. This is one of my favorite cuts from the album, and it has a very unique sound to it. In the liner notes of the album, Pete doesn't actually say the year he recorded it, but that it was a demo for the Empty Glass album (in the 1978-1980 range).

Pete's notes on the song:

"Recorded on a 24-track in my studio at our country place. This song was written for my first solo album EMPTY GLASS. I first put the lyric together at the same time as 'And I Moved' for submission to Bette Midler. Neither song ever reached her. It didn't seem to impress the producer Chris Thomas, maybe it was ahead of its time. It sounds a little behind it now, but I still think it's great. The electro-pop sound was all done in a single pass (performance) on a Yamaha home organ with the bass pedals, drum machine, upper and lower keyboards and arpeggio units all laid onto separate trucks. Modern home organs are really very complex computer synthesizers that are a damn sight easier to 'programme' than the so called real thing. I love 'em and will buy more as soon as I get enough space."

Me too! I've also heard that The Who did a full band version of 'Blue, Red and Grey'. I would have loved to hear that!

I wanna say this is the Scoop remaster from 2006, but I'm not sure of the date because I don't have the CD right in front of me at the moment (it's back home at my parents' house right now--I'm in college). I also had to do some funny things at the time to get around copyright... Anyway, the CD itself sounds excellent--highly recommended!

Sounds better with Pete singing. Imagine if Bette Midler was singing this or "And I Moved" It really 'works' with Pete singing it! : D

I always liked this too. Weird, but I do. Too bad he or (they) never used this this. I wonder how it would sound with real instruments and a kick ass band.
