Yachts were one of the pre-eminent power pop bands in post-punk Liverpool, playing their first gig at the legendary Eric's club supporting Elvis Costello. They were subsequently signed to Stiff Records and released their classic debut single "Suffice To Say" before moving on to Radar Records and further releases including the cult classic 45 "Yachting Type."

"Mantovani's Hits" was a track on their self-titled first album and was always a hugely popular live number. It dwells on the idea of what it would have been like if Rock'n'Roll had never happened, and popular music hadn't ever progressed any further than the early 50's and the likes of The Mantovani Light Orchestra.

"We're not a band who normally dwell

On social comment, and just as well.

But what if back, in 56

No-one had bought those Elvis hits?

- Mantovani's hits

All you ever hear

- Mantovani's hits

Wait for the next one to appear."

Tha band toured the States supporting The Who and Joe Jackson amongst others, and their album made the Billboard Top 200. They finally split in 1981. Henry Priestman, whose cheesey keyboards were the groups trademark, joined and had success with The Christians, but then later he and two of the other band members - singer JJ Campbell and bassist Martin Dempsey - re-grouped as It's Immaterial, who had chart success in the UK with "Driving Away From Home."

It's long been a project idea of mine to do a video for this track and when I stumbled across a few old newsreels of Mantovani and His Orchestra it all fell into place.

Oh and don't be fooled - some of the film clips have been edited and speeded up in parts in order to fit the music. Mantovani was so NOT this swinging!

Enjoy.

Thank you for posting these videos. The Yachts were a renaissance band. Great memories!

Fab! I finally got to hear Do The Chud on an Unearthed CD. Bizarre that it's the first Yachts (ish) track I've got on CD.

One of my favourite bands of the era. I wish someone would re-issue their albums (with the singles/B-sides as additional tracks) on CD.

There's at least 3 other Yachts vids available on youtube now. Check them out: "Yachting Type", "Suffice To Say" and "Look Back In Love (not in anger)"

Nice work Gav but your chronology's a bit out. It's Immaterial were around before The Christians and both Martin and Henry had left before "Driving Away From Home" was a hit.

Wicked. I've got a badge with a globe on it somewhere. Other than that, I have a poster of the type displayed in shops. My 'Look back in love' is on blue vinyl.

You're welcome! Just realised that it was Feb 7th 1978 when I saw them - 30 years ago!! Now I feel ancient. I got both albums and all their singles (apart from the B-side of Big In Japan when they were the Chuddie Nuddies). Pity they never made it to CD. One day perhaps.

Thanks for that - good to see that the Hope and Anchor's Tequila Sunrises didn't do my memory any real damage.

Was that from a BBC recording? I might even have that somewhere on cassette.

"24 Hours from Tulsa" confirmed. Released in the UK on 45 as the B-side of ADA 57 on Radar. A-side was called "I.O.U. (in the oddments drawer)".

OMG I have searched since the 80s for this band. ONe of the greatest and yet impossible to find musical groups from my teens. How do I find more?

Unless my memory is playing tricks, and I am thinking of another band - I'm pretty sure the Yachts used to play '24 Hours from Tulsa' live. The Stranglers soon after released 'Walk On By' - and the similarity (I think) of approach was very striking. Anyway - I'd better return to the present before I go completely 'Life on Mars'.

I second that. Any way you could just make a video with a blank background with the lyrics? Would love to hear Suffice To Say, Semaphore Love, Yachting Type, etc. Anything from their debut album would be great. I have this album on vinyl (unopened still)
