I am with 95thFoot. To my knowledge English Settlement was planned as an album where they could use all the studio wizardry and without thinking of live. That does not mean that every of the songs of it can not be played live. But some of the album is not reproducibly live for a 4 men gang. BTW. Black Sea is also my favourit, and this is one of the best versions of Towers of London. Peter Kroll, Singapore

@95thFoot Sorry friend can't agree on that one, English Settlement was the last album played as a tour, sadly I had tickets for that one but due to AP's collapse in Paris that in effect ended their touring. ES was and still is a great album, and the little bits of it on the net shown live are really very good. It was not intentional the end of touring, for this precipitated Terry Chambers departure as a non writer touring was an important income stream. That aside, Blacksea is still my fav, LP

This was the last album by XTC, for which they wrote the songs to be played live. After that, it was all baroque overdubbings. It's therefore their tightest, most cogent album, IMO.

I just love the guitar interaction that weaves throughout their songs, truly brilliant. More guitarists today should strive to write complimentary parts that use differing chord structures and accent lines. Dave and Andy were masters of this type of playing, I can only watch from afar and learn.

Hair bands didn't really become de rigueur for bands until the other end of this decade (87-89). But yes, these guys know their onions and are the real item.

Such a great band live. So inventive in the studio. One of the most overlooked innovative drummers ever. So glad to have seen them so many times, happy days.

Saw them in the States for Black Sea and you are right about Andy. He was such a dervish that I thought he was a complete extrovert, but quite the opposite. No question they were an incredible live band and this period in the studio is second to none.

All that's missing is the "CLANG" of the hammer against the steel fire extinguisher from the studio recording!

Woah - that finish was brutally powerful: they should have ended the song like that on the studio recording. Chambers' caught the emotion just right. Haunting.
