There were no Russian peasants in Ukrainian villages to work on the land. Majority of Russian real peasantry was sent to Gulags and further to the North. May be there were a few, but to be in charge not to work the land. All of these new comers, Russian and Jews, were sent to assume the jobs such doctors , teachers etc. and over government positions after the elimination of Ukrainian middle class. That how it happened in Western Ukraine in 1939-1941 and 1944-1953 and a bit easier after.

Yes, Marcuss476, I am a WWII survivor, I remember the horror stories that I heard in the refugee camps about how Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, etc suffered. Katyn forest and other horrors. The people of that region have been treated abominably, I pray that they all get along now and build and create not destroy and kill. I hope that the only rivalry is about who has the best economy, the cleanest country, most tourists, who dances better and has the tastiest food and the most beautiful women!

I've heard about that. In fact the genuine Ukrainians live in western Ukraine. Russian mostly live in donbass and southern Ukraine. In the years 1939-1945 stalin sent over 2,000,000 Poles to Kazahstan and Siberia.Less than a handfull returned to Poland, the rest died in gulags & mines. In April 1940 Stalin wiped out the flower of Polish society. The soviets killed with cold blood over 50,000 Polish officers of the armed forces, doctors, scientists, teachers, clerks, politicians.
