Wreckless Eric!

"Semaphore Signals" - (b side of 1977 "Whole Wide World" single)

lyrics:

I live up here on this hill

She lives down there in the green belt

Her parents don't like me cos I'm come from this hill

There little girls future is in doubt

I ain't got no money to buy her

Her parents expect nothing less

But at night under cover of darkness

She sneaks out to receive my S.O.S.

I'm sending semaphore signals to the green belt

Messages of love down to her house

Semaphore signals to the girl I love

Semaphore signals coming down from above

I'm up all night sending signals

Tapping out love in morse code

Forever trying new angles

Keeping in touch on a string telephone

Messages of love to the green belt

From a semaphore lover on the hill

Who's one day gonna hear some wedding bells

Till then I'll be standing by this window sill

Just sending semaphore signals to the green belt

Semaphore signals down to her house

Semaphore signals to the girl I love

Semaphore signals coming down from above

I'm sending semaphore signals to the green belt

Semaphore signals to the green belt

I'm sending semaphore signals to the green belt

Just sending semaphore signals to the...

Steve: I know of NO ONE that I have ever met from America that has thought it was any thing other than "grain belt". We do not have "green belts" here and it SOUNDS like he is saying "grain" and as long as one of them is on a hill and the other is not it makes perfect sense (a la "Down In The Boondocks")...

@SkeebWilcox: Nope - it's 'green belt' not 'grain belt'. Green belt refers to the ring of pleasant green middle class suburbs around the central city (where she lives and he doesn't). Class differences between the singer and the girl he's in love with are the point of the song. 'Grain belt' would make no sense in this context.

First off, one of the greatest songwriters of our lives. Secondly, this is one of his best songs. Thirdly, the lyrics are wrong on the post, though. It's "grain belt" not "green belt". Thanks for posting!!!

I bought this album in 1979 I think and boy does listening to it now bring back excellent memories. LOVE IT!! "Walking on the Surface of the Moon" is another great tune.

I guess this is WE's interpretation of a love song, heh.
