One of the most wonderful songs ever written. As far as I'm concerned, the lyrics are so true, my life would have been very dull without popular music. Many times listening to my favourite recordings has lifted me out of the doldrums. Sinatra's brilliant interpretation makes the whole thing just perfect.

There is a recording of this session. The orchestra starts up and a few notes later, Sinatra comes in with the first words. But each time, he stops. The perfectionist rejects one start after another. Then he has an inspiration. He tells the conductor to hold back the band until after the opening notes. He starts singing a capella.with the opening phrase. That is the stunning beginning we hear on this, the published version. It is a thrilling privilege to hear a genius at his craft.

I heard Frank sing this when Sirius XM played " a man and his music" on the radio and heard him say after: " You know without songs people would have to talk in the shower, at parties people would stand around a piano and say 'what's that'". Funny guy.
