Johnny Taylor roots are anchored in gospel music. Moving to Chicago, he became a member of The Highway QC's and for a short time, The Soul Stirrers. He split singing duties between The Highway QC's and the secular group, The Five Echoes. When Sam Cooke's SAR Records went defunct, Taylor relocated to Memphis, Tenn where he had great success singing with Stax Records. After Stax folded in the mid 1970s, Taylor switched to Columbia Records, where he made his best-known hit, "Disco Lady", in 1976.
