(Old comment but..) Ummm... No it didn't.. Gothenburg-style melodeath made melodeath (/Gothenburg style melodeath) popular but they did not 'invent' melodeath. The first melodeath-album was actually Finnish, Sentenced - North from Here, released June 1, 1993. Amorphis released "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" in July 12, 1994, continuing the Finnish sound. The Amorhis album was recorded only about a month after the release of Dark Tranquillity's debut album.

@juanfjimenez9 First of all, these guys are from Finland, not Japan. Second, guttural vocals is a distinct style of vocals that many people like. It's not necause they can't sing in classical heavy metal style, it's just that they don't want to.
