One of my all time favorite gospel songs. "Wayfarin' Stranger" is done in a simple, but beautiful way on "Songs From The Mountain". The fiddle is magnificent, highlighting Tim O'Brien's vocals. They compliment each other perfectly! It is from the album, "Songs From the Mountain" released in 1998. Dirk Powell, Tim O'Brien, and John Herrmann wanted to stay true to the Appalachian roots of the mountains and did an incredible job of this on their album.

These three musicians were so taken with the book, 'Cold Mountain' by Charles Frazier, that they wanted to make a companion cd. This is prior to both the movie and the movie soundtrack for 'Cold Mountain'. The album is filled with authentic music you could hear throughout the mountains during the Civil War period and before. You can hear it now if you are extremely lucky. Enjoy the past and now the future! "Songs From the Mountain" is an enduring testament to the music of the Appalachians. ENJOY!!!

My niece plays violin, so I've sent her some links to Tim's fiddle pieces. Now she's picked up a mandolin, so of course I've gone back to the same well - Tim O'Brien playing mandolin. What a maestro! And his voice...! This tune is exquisite, heart-filled, gutsy. Tim is an American treasure.

this song has wandered through times and comes in many versions, with different lyrics and interpretations. Here in Europe it is often used in funerals, sung in a more sacral style. Rumour has it that it was the gypsies who sang it by the fire in the evenings more than 200 years ago(for all that i know even longer)This was so beautiful and really gave me goosebumps. I think from now on we`ll have to sing it this way. Greetings from Norway

What a wonderful concert to have gone to! I would love to see and hear Tim O'Brien. I am sure it was a great time. He is excellent on recordings, but I have seen enough artists "catch fire" on stage. He sounds like he enjoys playing for people...and I'm pretty sure he and his band were "on fire" that night. Thank you so much for letting me know your personal experience. I appreciate all comments, but especially this since you actually got to see him! My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)

I saw O'brien years ago at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut and he and his band were better that night than any recording I've ever heard.

@MrCajunmojo I think about anything he does is great. I love John Riley, The Blackest Crow, and A House of Gold the best...right now. It changes daily! Thank you for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara) p.s. I see you found this in a playlist, but I don't know how that works. This is my first experience with that. They left out quite a bit of his music. I have lots of Tim O'Brien if you end up liking his stuff. Thanks again.
