From the album Excitable Boy. A song about the American invasion of Veracruz, Mexico in 1914 in an attempt to control the results of the Mexican revolution.

Lyrics to Veracruz :

By Warren Zevon and Jorge Calderon

I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns

I heard Maria crying

Late last night I heard the news

That Veracruz was dying

Veracruz was dying

Someone called Maria's name

I swear it was my father's voice

Saying, "If you stay you'll all be slain

You must leave now - you have no choice

Take the servants and ride west

Keep the child close to your chest

When the American troops withdraw

Let Zapata take the rest"

I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns

I heard Maria calling

Saying, "Veracruz is dying

And Cuernavaca's falling"

Aquel dia yo jure (On that day I swore)

Hacia el puerto volvere (To the port I will return)

Aunque el destino cambio mi vida (Even though destiny changed my life)

En Veracruz morire (In Veracruz I shall die)

Aquel dia yo jure (On that day I swore)

I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns

I heard them in the harbor

Saying, "Veracruz is dying"

By Warren Zevon and Jorge Calderon

I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns

Late last night I heard the news

That Veracruz was dying

A college buddy of mine called to say that this was the 23rd anniversary of our having met and hung out for a short time with Warren at a show in Pittsburgh. So I came here to listen to Veracruz, which I consider one of his best offerings (Warren's, not my college friend's). Then I notice the date under the masthead of the Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle. The 111th anniversary of the shelling of Veracruz. Warren keeps on delivering in strange ways, man.

Just rediscovered Warren Zevon after quite a long time - what a brilliantly original and tuneful lyricist and tunesmith. A real songwriter.

I totally agree with Fred Wright. Warren could have been a very good novelist. In fact some of his best friends were writers, including Carl Hiaasen, of whom he visited several times in Florida. He was also a good friend of Stephen King who loved his dark side. Warren wrote some of the most beautiful ballads in pop music. He was all around the best lyricist in rock of his generation.

Miss you, man. Feel your spirit in the dark and the light. Still waking up with shaking hands, still trying to find that girl who understands. Shantih.

Zevon wasn't a mere pop songsmith. He was a great American novelist.

A very astute comment. Warren was sardonic and brilliant. He had a rather dark wit. But he was a phenomenal song writer. He was poignant, culturally astute, and sang about many subjects including boxing and hockey. Warren also had an interest in history as can be gleaned in this song. Woodrow Wilson was no Saint.

Warren Zevon is one of the most underrated artists of the last 100 years. His lyrics are brilliant, witty, incisive, and fun. The world is a poorer place without him.

Who the hell writes like this? Answer: (for those keeping score) no-one anymore. There are books, hell MOST books, that are less vivid than what Zevon put into three and a half minutes of lyrics.
