Although his version of this song is one of the best remembered early versions, it was actually "The Prisoner's Song" on the other side that accounted for the big sales numbers (12 weeks at number 1, 32 weeks on the charts, if I remember correctly).

I bought 4 boxes of old 78's this week. One of the first ones I cleaned up and played was by Mr Dalhart - not this record, but another excellent very early country record. That lead me to Mr. Dalhart's back story on Google and YouTube. What a great story, and what a great artist.

We're a band from southern Brazil. You can check out our rendering of the classic Wreck Of Old '97 - Casco. Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed playing it.

This recording could be a little later than 1924 because its sound quality suggests that it is an electrical recording which were first made in 1925.

one of earliest examples of country guitar in that he uses both the walking bass and the alternating bass (Travis or Atkins picking) -- Hart Wand's Dallas blues used this technique on piano (1912) - and Sylvester Weaver (Guitar Rag about 1923) used them fluently, -- in addition to magnificent slide playing--but I've little doubt these techniques originated with Delta Bluesmen long before 1900. I shoulda asked Jimmy Davis what he remembered when I had the chance.
