I got to know Vern back in the late 80s before he got his deal with Columbia and had his last and most significant run of success. I also spent some time writing and recording with him in those days. Anyway, one day he had just come out of the studio and had recorded five songs on a shoestring budget that were to be on the Columbia album if the deal went through. This song was one of them and it knocked me out of my chair. Vern was happy with it but he wasn't sure it was a hit. A bit too slow and sad for radio, he feared. (Until that time his only #1 had been "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance.) For you harmony buffs: Listen closely to the low harmony part, how it bends downward and upward for just the right touch. Vern may or may not have sung that part but he surely supervised every syllable. He had the best ear for harmony of anyone I've ever come across. I'll never forget what a mutual friend of ours who is now a star producer said about the album when it was released: "Vern finally found a producer (Bob Montgomery) who had sense enough to get out of Vern's way and let him make his record." Believe as much of this as you want but it would be a difficult series of events to make up, nor would I if I could.
