Sounds kind of weird for the lead vocals to have no ambient reverb and the background harmonies to be drenched in it. Still sounds perfect for a desolate Western movie. Maybe a Spaghetti Western.

My favorite version! The background vocals sound so haunting! It reminds of the past, decades ago....even before my time, with a ghostly presence involved. It really makes a deep impression on you. Just amazing!! My Mom and Dad loved this song, and it always reminds me of them. God bless you Mom and Dad!

Of all the versions of this song, Vaughn Monroe gives me goose bumps.

My favorite version of this song. I have it on vinyl from a 1969 release called the RCA Heirloom Collection, in which they celebrated 50 years of recorded music (at the time).

I recall as if it were yesterday, jumping out of bed on a Saturday morning, when Ifirst heard this recording. The arrangement and wedding of the beat, voice, and every element is flawless. Vaughan Monroe was a star of the Big Band era, almost unique in that the band earned its bread and butter largely due to the singer-bandleader.Great recording.Funning, hearing this now, some 65 years later I am struck at the thought that this could be Robert Mitchum singing. [Weird, but he did cut some records[.
