You're welcome. If you're interested in non-British performances of Vaughan Williams's symphonies, I've just uploaded his No. 8 in a terrific 1958 stereo broadcast played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under its then-conductor Charles Munch. I hope Vaughan Williams admirers like it!

I specifically referred to "commercial recordings" when I said none had been made by the non-British orchestras I named. I know that Barbirolli, Boult, Slatkin and Haitink recorded the 5th with London orchestras. I also know that Stokowski never conducted the work in his life. Leon Goossens was an oboist, not a conductor. The Cincinnati Orchestra recorded RVW's 2nd Symphony, not the 5th, with Sir Eugene Goossens. Previn has played RVW symphonies abroad but only recorded them in London.

an orchestra is a group of players whether they be British, American or German it is the conductor that creates the sound. Barbirolli, Boult, Stokowski, Slatkin, Haitink have all done the 5th Symphony. Leon Goosens also did it with the Cincinnati Orchestra, Previn also did it with an orchestra from he far east with great critical acclaim....its even on youtube if you want to look. I also heard it in Israel by the west eastern divan orchestra with Baremboim

If you're right, then how come there hasn't been a single commercial recording of any of his symphonies by the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Leningrad Philharmonic, and so on. RVW may be a great 20th century composer as far as his homeland is concerned, but abroad, if recordings are any guide, his symphonies means far less than, say, those of Sibelius, Shostakovich, Nielsen and Prokofiev.

I was there...it was magical! My favourite RVW symphony is the 4th...but this, the 5th was the highlight on the night

Beautiful performance, I was in the audience seating in the circle area and you get a good view and sound, I'm a saxophonist and I played cello six years ago but I've been play sax since I ended because the sound is too sad, I'll be coming next year.

RVW's 5th is without question one of the most beautiful of all 20th century symphonies and the BBC couldn't have chosen a better extract to demonstrate it. I was fortunate enough to be in the audience - wonderful
