Actually, ma'am, it is definitely a sub-genre of metal. Also, "punk" as a genre is ridiculous. Punk is more of a mindset. It has more to do with non-conforming lyrics and lifestyles than how a dude plays guitar. Metal is actually a sub-genre of Rock. I know, right? Your mind = blown.

Hardcore isn't a subgenre of metal. It's short for hardcore punk, which came from rock.
