Dolphin brain stem transmission time is faster than that normally found in humans, and is roughly equivalent to the speed found in rats. As echo-location is the dolphin's primary means of sensing its environment -- analogous to eyes in primates -- and since sound travels four and a half times faster in water than in air, scientists speculate that the faster brain stem transmission time, and perhaps the paralimbic lobe as well, support speedy processing of sound.
Cetacean intelligence evolved completely separately from primate intelligence.
Dolphins are known to engage in complex play behaviour, which includes such things as producing stable underwater toroidal air-core vortex rings or "bubble rings".
There are instances where dolphins and whales have supported ill animals of a different species. by either remaining by their side until they recover, or by actively bringing them to the surface of the water to allow them to breathe. In some cases dolphins have aided humans who were drowning.
Furthermore, dolphins and other cetaceans have been witnessed placing themselves in between a distressed individual and the source of danger (such as protecting humans from sharks), or even attacking the source of danger.
Ulver (Norwegian for "wolves") is a multi-disciplinary musical group from Norway. Since their first, folklore-influenced black metal release in 1993, Ulver's style has ever been changing by mixing elements of experimental, electronic and ambient music, avant-garde rock and trip hop.
So long, and thanks for all the fish (and soundwaves).
