The split with the U-vox album the Ultravox project lost many vital things. It lost Warren Canns superb drumming and percussion programming. It lost the waking and sometimes punishing guitar and the strong vocal of Midge Ure. It also lost Chris Cross unmistakeable bass handling. The Ultravox sound was so distinguished that it could not be easily copied. What it didn´t loose was Billy Curries fantastic classical contribution. But that is not enough to sound as tough rough Ultravox should.

Heard this song first on the (IMO outstanding) "Future picture"-Live-Album back in 1995 and since then I'm totally in love with this masterpiece of songwriting !! Amazing popsong ! I wish I could say that about the actual new stuff ("Brilliant").....

The masses say "IF I WAS" was one of the best songs of it"s time so i think you"ll find your in the minority wee man ! The charts speak for themself. you should come out from Midge Ure"s backside and maybe you"ll see it,and once again you"ve not done your homework wee man.My SOURCES are the people involved. "FACTS" look it up in the oxford. There is a link to your fav songs Waste,Wild and Wind,so blow wee man. I rest my case :-)

FACT 1 According to MIDGE URE Danny Mitchel wrote If I Was and Midge only took the rough edges out. FACT 2 According to MIDGE URE (and Billy Currie) Billy Currie and Chris Payne wrote Fade to Grey with Midge only adding the Lyrics, please note my sources. As for Wastelands,When the wind blows and Call of the Wild, well there just CRAP.My source for midge struggling on his own comes from Billy Currie who i think might know about the matter.Do your homework and you"ll find out for yourself.

leading synth sounds exactly the same like the one on The Anvil (Visage) , the whole song sounds a bit like Visage (more than like Ultravox) youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=yM47p8UnBf4#t=168s I like it .... :-)

@macksmix Yeah, yeah, yeah… You can say what you want. The fact is, however, that Ultravox! was cold dead by 1979. The early 80s was Midge’s heyday and whatever he touched turned into sheer gold. Furthermore, Danny Mitchel co-wrote some of The Gift, not wrote! I repeat: no Midge, no Ultravox. :) BTW, have a good listen to Midge’s 3 other solo studio albums. Try: Lied, Just For You, Live Forever, Guns and Arrows, Somebody...

@Sebek1969 , Midge Ure has always struggled on his own,he needs other people to do the doggy work for him...like Danny Mitchel for example who wrote all of his best songs when he went solo after Ultravox(IF I WAS,Perfect Smile etc..),and yes John Foxx was the original singer/songwriter with Ultravox.Midge Ure"s Visage days where the same,he even goes around claiming that he wrote Fade to Grey when he only wrote the lyrics,Chris Payne and Billy Currie done the hard bit.

macksmix, I say: each to their own. To me, there was no Ultravox before nor after Midge. Amen. PS. wasn't the band called Ultravox! in the Foxx's days? ;-)

@Sebek1969 The band where called Ultravox before Midge Ure was around, so you are way out mate.

This thing... band... should have never been allowed to be called Ultravox. The rule is simple: no Midge no Ultravox. However, I must admit in all honesty: this song is brilliant! Congratulations, Billy.
