The Unforgettable Fire *is* me. I played my cassette hundreds of times, til it broke-- after that, the only way I could get that tape to play was if I rewound it by hand, with a pencil, which I did hundreds of times... I was 14 and I couldn't afford to buy a new one, lol. Wire was my favorite, favorite, favorite song until I fell in love with Running to Stand Still in 1987.

This was a magical time to be in high school. I remember buying this when I snuck out of school at lunch to hit the record store at the mall. Raw, real, powerful....THIS was the U2 I fell in love with.

Wow thanks for sharing,i though i'd heard it all ! This should've at least been on the remastered Unforgettable Fire cd. That one Edge riff is much more prominent in this demo,it kinda is only heard in the background on the final version.

Sounds very similar to my journey... except for replacing The Who with The Smiths.

Absolutely. The connection for me was easy. Their music made me understand certain things for what they are. U2's music takes you to places and lets you experience feelings that don't even exist yet...that's powerful!!!! The only other band i can say that about is The Who.

Well said... I didn't discover them until "Under a Blood Red Sky" and my first show was on the Unforgettable Fire tour then, the Amnesty tour and so on. I was captivated for all the reasons you said... Bono was UNLIKE any frontman I had seen... he was, as you said, raw, honest, powerful, sexy, angry, spiritual... I had seen nothing like that before. Like you, I will always be forever grateful for their impact on my life; they shaped me (and to a degree, still continue to do so).

I've been a U2 fan since 1980. When i first heard their music i was like, "Holy Shit" i'm hearing sounds I've never heard before by any band. Then when i saw them at the Ritz in NY in 1981, that just solidified my feelings towards their approach to playing music. Back then their music was Raw, Honest, Powerful Angry, Sexy and most of all from the heart. I will always listen to what U2 puts out!!!
