I'd agree with your last statement. In fact, other than a few bands (Death, Behemoth, etc) that come to mind, the vast majority of metal bands release their highest quality work in their earlier years of existence. That being said, technicality and creativity do not always go hand in hand, and I believe that is the case with Trivium. As I said before, I am well aware that Heafy is much more skilled now than he was when he wrote this. Still, Trivium's most interesting riffs are on this album, imo

It's my favorite album of all time, but saying it's more creative is a bit much. The whole album is very simple from a technical standpoint. A 17 year old could have written this...in fact, he did. But with that being said, it's my favorite album. Just goes to show you don't need years of experience or a knowledge of complex scales to create a masterpiece.

This is Trivium's best album, imo. Yeah, Heafy grew into a better lead guitarist on the later albums, but the riffs on this album are 10X more interesting/creative than what all their other albums have to offer, imho.

I mean I know this was when Matt was 17 and one of their first albums, but looking at now at his clean vocals compared to on In Waves, he has improved in leaps and bounds and it's so good that he is only 25 and the band has so many years ahead of them \m/
