On this day in 1961 {June 2nd} Bobby Lewis performed "Tossin' and Turnin'" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...At the time the song was at #34 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; just over five weeks later on July 10th, 1961 it would peak at #1* {for 7 weeks} and it stayed on the chart for almost a half year {23 weeks}...And on June 27th, 1961 it reached #1 {for 10 weeks} on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...Bobby Lewis celebrated his 82nd birthday four months ago on February 17th {2015}...* “Tossin’ and Turnin’” prevented two other songs from reaching #1; "The Boll Weevil Song" by Brook Benton and “I Like It Like That (Part 1)" by Chris Kenner, both those songs peaked at #2 for three weeks each...

Being raised in the deep South, I never heard the first 11 seconds of this great record. The DJ's never played it! Great record!

Is this week moving slow? Hump day is here! Let's get Wednesday started with some Maxwell House Dark Roast Coffee and the AM1070 5:20 oldie. Written by Ritchie Adams and Malou Rene, and originally recorded by Bobby Lewis, "Tossin' and Turnin'" reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1961, and the R&B chart and has since become a standard on oldies compilations. It was named Billboard's #1 single for 1961, after spending seven consecutive weeks at the top. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked the song as the 27th biggest song of all time that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the chart. It is one of only six songs from the 1960s to spend at least seven weeks in the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. On the original hit single version, the track begins with Lewis singing "I couldn't sleep at all last night," and it appears this way on most oldies compilations. However, on some releases the song has a prelude, where Lewis sings "Baby...Baby...you did something to me," followed by a musical cue into the first verse. Lewis usually includes this prelude when he performs the song live. It fools into thinking it might be a slow ballad; it isn't! Baby, baby, baby! What are you doing to me? Ya got me "Tossin' and Turnin'" Here's Bobby Lewis. Have a good Wednesday!
