I saw and heard him in person in Chicago in the 1950's at a concert he gave for a small group my dad belonged too and in Vegas at the Old Riviera casino in the mid 1960's. I was seated up front at the Chicago concert and heard him sing also without the Mic. His voice had heft for a popular singer and in the 1951 film Two tickets for Broadway he sings some music from the opera Pagliacci. He could sing softly, lyrically or belt out a song and was great at both, a real fine performer.

I always thought the song (with lyrics) was titled and started with: 'Tonight's The Nigh' but I guess I was wrong. I don't own the pop version by any artist. It was a big hit by Tony Martin before I was born in 1941, although I strongly prefer the classical Tchaikovsky. It appears that most have dismissed the lyrical version. Today, the classical version rules as musical appreciation becomes more advanced. Popular music, as a whole, is derived from the classics.
