This song always conjures up a very specific scenario in my mind: Cookie Monster. But hear me out. You listen to Tom Waits - so, I know you'll get it.Picture the Cookie Monster in a completely black room singing this, describing all the horrors of life. The camera spinning around like water going down a drain. He frantically shoves cookies in his mouth, feeding his addiction, oblivious to all the crumbs spilling onto his fur. He is spiraling out of control.But it's not a joke. It is 100% dead serious. The pain is so real. *Too real*. Like a Muppet Car Crash - which is fine and silly - until you notice the fact they bleed *real* blood. He finds Animal dead in an alley with a needle in his arm. Kermit and Piggy having sex in full BDSM regalia. Waldorf creeping up on Statler, who is sleeping in a bed, and proceeding to rape him. So much horror.We see Cookie Monster in dire need of a fix, banging his head against the wall of a small, grey, filthy apartment, rocking back and forth. Then, he's sucking off Beaker, who hands him a small baggie of Cookie dough in exchange for the sexual favor. Cookie Monster looks into the mirror, and does not recognize the face he sees. His eyes are dead. All he sees is a Monster. A Cookie Monster.Misery is the River of the World, indeed.

Un superbe hymne de la décadence de l'humanité. On a l'impression que c'est une descente aux enfers chantée d'une voix sépulcrale par le le diable lui même. Bravo à Tom waits qui nous régale d'une véritable oeuvre artistique musicale, qui nous prouve ici qu'une chanson ne doit pas forcément être mélodieuse pour être belle.

A fierce and powerful statement, delivered in a perfect voice; harder, bleaker, angrier, bitterer than Waits has sounded before or since. But I always want to say to him, Tom, it's not really that bad. Man is able to overcome his brutal nature, we've seen that time after time. And even if it doesn't last and you have to work to keep driving down your more selfish, shortsighted urges over and over, those short moments of gentleness are worth everything.
