Emmanuel's unique style — he calls it simply "finger style" — is akin to playing a guitar the way a pianist plays a piano. While Tommy has many imitators, few approach his mastery. He even has his own annual guitar festivals, "Tommy Fest," in Newport News, Virginia, Louisville, KY and Dortmund, Germany.

Jazz legend Chet Atkins was one of the first people who inspired Emmanuel to pick up a guitar. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans, and is responsible for declaring Emmanuel a "Certified Guitar Player" — an honour shared by only two other people in the world (Jerry Reed and John Knowles). "I think he's probably the greatest finger-picker in the world today," Atkins said a few months prior to his death in 2001. "He's inventive, fearless and has a flawless sense of rhythm. You can't watch Tommy perform and not feel happy."

"I've spent my whole life from the age of 4 playing music and entertaining people. I never wanted to do anything else," says Emmanuel. "Playing the guitar is much more than a career for me. It's a passion ... my life. The best thing in the world is to make people happy and bring them together through my music. Because I'm touring so much these days, the whole world has become my home."

In his storied career, the Grammy-nominated Emmanuel has set sales records that have yet to be broken and performed alongside hundreds of other musical legends including Chet Atkins, EricClapton, Sir George Martin, Hank Marvin and Joe Walsh. Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau and Sheena Easton have also recorded songs written by Emmanuel.

The earliest recorded hit version was by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra. It was recorded February 7, 1940 and released by Columbia Records as catalog number 35391, with the flip side "Fable of the Rose". The Les Paul Trio recorded a version released as V-Disc 540B with a spoken introduction which was issued in November, 1945 by the U.S. War Department. In 1948, bandleader Stan Kenton enjoyed some success with his version of the tune. The recording, with a vocal by June Christy, was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 911 (with the flip side "Willow, Weep for Me") and 15117(with the flip side "Interlude"). It reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on July 9, 1948, its only week on the chart, at #27.

The best-known recording of the song is by Les Paul and Mary Ford, made on January 4, 1951. The record was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 1451, with the flip side "Walkin' and Whistlin' Blues", and spent 25 weeks (beginning on March 23, 1951) on the Billboard chart, 9 weeks at No1. The record was subsequently re-released by Capitol as catalog number 1675, with "Josephine" on the B-side.

Tommy's acoustic is great for some things, but when playing the jazz stuff, he should choose a guitar with better tone. Oh yeah, like I'm giving Tommy Emmanuel advice.

As a compliment, you are so good (and so are the other two) that you give me the shits. LOL I never had the opportunity you guys had as I was only a part time professional - I had to work for a living during the day as most musos in OZ did. This limited my learning ability as now you can buy books to help where in my day all you could do was listen to records. Oscar Petersen and Ramsay Lewis and of course Errol Garner I loved. " I could have been a contender" LOL

Brilliant - not quite Django but actually better in many ways. Actually my favourite song of any. Pity Stephan is not alive to join you. Tommy I have seen you live and I didn't believe what you were doing. (guitar Boogie Shuffle) As an ex pro muso (piano) Cloudland player etc I just love your music. I have worked with some great guitar players as well but I am your fan in any genre.

Quite simply: musical magnificence! (and a majickal mastery of the classic made famous by the real inventor of the electric guitar to whom this is an hommage: Les Paul, who passed in 2009....)

I would say not better but different. I love both this version as well as Les and Mary's classic original. Of course, Tommy was a huge fan of Les, and Les admired Tommy greatly. I would guess it was Chet Atkins who turned Les on to Tommy. Btw, Frank Vignola and Vinnie Ragnola are no slouches either.

What is really cool... Tommy can make that Maton sound like a swing guitar , that is characteristic of Django 1930's I wonder if its in the plectrum that he uses. It does sound like he mutes the notes quite a bit ...Any idea's Dave Ab
