i was 17 and it was one of the first few occasion i smoked weed, i was listening to this song and had one of the most wonderful runs of imagination, it felt like it lasted for hours and it was about everything that exists in this world and every feeling a young person possibly can feel and all that

This is taken from the script of the musical 'Alice' by Paul Schmidt, a fictional exploration of the relationship between Lewis Carrol and Alice Liddell that Tom Waits wrote the songs for. In the play, this is a letter written by Lewis Carrol to Alice. It has a couple of further lines at the end, not used in the song "I buried a rabbit's heart stuck with pins in the graveyard in hope it would break this spell of love. But it did not"

I think that it is interesting that the singer mr. Waits has black, longish hair. As people like that never seem to able to succeed in our society. They usually have their teeth ripped out and get mocked as some scape-goat for most their lives.

this poem reminds me of a dancer, a beautiful ballet dancer, whose beauty and sensuality posses you. Causing you to lose your self, and fall deep inside a lust induced vortex. This women is both a demon and an angel.

it's called spoken-word poetry-- words spoken over music. It's an under-rated art form and it's beautiful.
