I'm always writing those things down --- a little rain never hurt no one. Kathleen had this melody, and I saved it from the fire. She has all these Irish melodies. Then we read one of those terrible articles in a newspaper about a kid in a van that went out of control and went over a cliff, and they all died. Goes through some different time periods. Starts out with the ice man's mule, then it goes to the dancing on the roof with the ceiling coming down, and ends up in the van. So I think it comes forward in time, a little bit, with the images. But it's a song you can add another verse to, if you want.

Always loved it's efficiency & atypical order (finishing with the "story" of the girl gone missing)...but "Timmybear" points to another layer: with his knowledge, shovel & gloves WOW

Why does the narrator know what the LAST thing she said was? Why does he sleep with his shovel and his leather gloves? And the rain washes away evidence. There are a lot of hints to what's going on in the song, and I'm certain the narrator is the killer.

I interpreted this song completely differently. To me, the song's about being stronger than your circumstances, however bizarre or apparently dangerous. "A little trouble makes it worth the going." The girl at the end, to me, wants to see the ocean and will do what she needs to do.

.There are very few songs about child abduction, for good reason. They need to be painful and need to be meaningful and good and not just maudlin, this is the best, and I think Atmosphere's Last Night is in the same category, though a different genre.
