In 1971 he released 'The Year That Clayton Delaney Died,' the only single from the album 'In Search of a Song,' The hit charted at number one on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and number 42 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart.
This was his second number one single and biggest hit. The song is based on his childhood hero, Lonnie Easterly.
