"Fox on the Run" was first recorded by the English band Manfred Mann as a single issued in November of 1968, which reached #5 in the UK pop charts by the following month. It was later introduced to bluegrass by Bill Emerson and quickly became a bluegrass favorite. In 1976,Tom T. Hall covered the song on his Album, "Magnificent Music Machine", where it reached the #1 position on the Billboard Country Charts.

Vocals: Tom T. Hall

Words & Music: Tony Hazzard

Original Album: Magnificent Music Machine (Mercury Records - 1976)

Lyrics:

She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river

Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun

She took all the love that a poor boy could give her

And left me to die like a fox on the run

Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run

Now everybody knows the reason for my fall

A woman tempted me down in Paradise Hall

This woman tempted me and she took me for a ride

Like a lonely fox, boys, I need a place to hide

She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river

Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun

She took all the love that a poor boy could give her

And left me to die like a fox on the run

Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run

Oh, we'll drink a glass of wine, boys, to fortify our soul

We'll talk about the world and the friends we used to know

I see a string of girls who have put me on before

The game is nearly over and the hounds are at the door

She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river

Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun

She took all the love that a poor boy could give her

And left me to die like a fox on the run

Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run

I love this song !! It could be about every woman that has come into my life. They lied, they cheated, and they left me to die, each in their own little way. The one who cheated on me and dumped me on Christmas Eve 2012, was the sneekiest fox of all. Worse than my ex wive's. Great song, just says it all !!! Check out predivorce paranoia on U, tube, and 13 other songs. See Dating Suck's, and story's from the out house, and I'll keep the kids, on hayloft dreamer . com

Thanks for posting with lyrics. Hard to pick a favorite Tom T. song he's got so many great ones, but thisun's up there. What a prolific story teller! I just noticed on Wikipedia he also wrote "Harper Valley PTA" AND Alan Jaxons "Itty Bitty." Wow! Long Live Tom T. Hall ! !

I've listened to Country music for as long as I remember. Although I am from western N.C. where Bluegrass music is prevalent, this is the song that got me interested in in that form of music at the age of 14, way back in 1976. Nobody does this song as well as Tom T. Hall and there are some great versions out there.

My dad has the original "Magnificant Music Machine" album. I used to hear hear it when I was a little boy. I hate Manfred Mann's version.

Got to give my respect to the man who wrote this. Many thanks, Mr. Hazzard.

Dierks Bentley should've included this bluegrass gem on his "Up On The Ridge" bluegrass album. I listen to this version all day, all night, then wake up and listen again.
