Tom Robinson Band - Too good to be true 1978

Dreamed last night I was dreaming

Somebody answered my prayer

Cried out over my shoulder

Only the devil was there

Hold no hope for the future

Or good times seeing me through

Too good to be true

Too good to be true

Can't find the floor or the wardrobe

Can't find my way to the park

Life in a bedsitter bedlam

Afraid to go home in the dark

All day today just excuse for tomorrow

Tomorrow just something to do

Too good to be true

Too good to be true

(Instrumental)

I've given up reading the papers

I've given up watching TV

Hope in hell I'm able to tell

Whatever happened to me

Facing a phase in the future

Hope I've got something to lose

Too good to be true

Too good to be true

Too good to be true

Much too good

Too good to be true

Keep your hair on, It is just left wing sounding lyrics written to make money for the musician and the record company. Don't get reeled in. Good song though

Good song, great band (although I preferred the Mark Ambler era when Danny Kustow was using a Les Paul). It's harmonically similar to "Moondance", but I'm pretty sure it influenced the "Chad" song in "Spywatch" (a BBC children's educational TV programme!) nearly 20 years later.

@ysplse You've got it back to front - the far right do well when Labour are in power not the Tories. The BNP are imploding.

@Sweetfan78 eggzacly! thanks for reminding me the song I was trying to rembember! That's Van Morrison's alright! still a good song, though... but I guess it aint't too good to be unique! lol

@ysplse When it was written Callaghan had still a year to run in office before his disastrous campaign in May 79. However, we were aware of a storm brewing with Keith Joseph's public pronouncements .

This song is a reflection of the time it was written of a reactionary Tory Government causing economic; social & political chaos and Nazis NF on the streets stirring up racial hatred and bigotry Today we have? A reactionary Tory Government causing economic; social & political chaos and Nazis BNP + EDL on the streets stirring up racial hatred and bigotry, which makes this still sadly all too relevant. Wait for 5 years to do anything about either and we will quite literally reap the whirlwind.

Saw TRB at the Armadillo when they were touring for this album. got invited to the after party but was too wrecked by the time Tom arrived to say more than "Hey...?!" I was trying to remain reasonably sober so that I could, er, 'meet' Tom, but they were late. Ah. Ausin: the Good Ole Days. Re: Sweetfan 78; you are right! Never really put my finger on that b4

@gingerology, My first listen to this song. I agree - a very understated and precise solo.

Interesting take on Moondance. The rhythm is nearly spot on and the guitar solo is the vocal line. TRB definitely peaked with 2468 Motorway, and THAT solo is sweet compared to this derivative crap.

TRB were an immensely underated rock band that were'nt around long enough. This song has a very similar rythem 'n melody to Van Morrison's Moondance
