I love Tim Hardin and the great songs he wrote, it is relatively well known that Bobby Darin indirectly screwed him Bobby heard Tim singing the song that Tim wrote about his courtship with his wife Susan, If I Were a Carpenter , Bobby said he would love to record it Tim asked him not to until Tim's version came out, Bobby agreed ,but his management released it early Tim was in his car and so identical was his copy of Tim's singing and inflections that Tim actually thought it was himself until they announced it It was a major hit for Bobby and has been recorded by hundreds and hundreds of artists it has become a seminal American folk song Now a few years later Bobby writes a song and tries to pay Tim back by giving it to him, it does reach the top 10 but it is a particularly disingenuous song I mean it is the 1960's civil rights!!! and the most profound thing Bobby can write about it is (Hey there Mr Blackman can you help me ,I don't want your money or your game? I just want to be someone known to you as me, and I hope you feel the same? Well , so much for the struggle for civil rights, profound writing Bobby!! Really? What money was blackmen worried that white men would take from him ,when white men had all the money,!!! what game is he insinuating blackmen are running? I just thought it an obvious and silly song and certainly no payback for, If I Were a Carpenter, Reason To Believe, Lady Came From Baltimore, Don't Make Promises ,all recorded by Bobby , all written and sung by Tim Hardin first, and although taste is a variable thing and Bobby was a skilled singer , but Tim not only wrote these but had a voice like silk, or as smooth as warm bourbon with an occasional warble whether natural or purposelessly put there, added a vulnerability that made his heartfelt poetic love songs that more real !!If you get a chance listen to Tim's How Can We Hang On to a Dream, absolutely beautiful!!

Thanks for this wonderful memory , Chris. I remember Tim Hardin so well. Sorry he, and so many others, are gone. I would love to hear what their message would be today.

On this day in 1969 {July 27th} "Simple Song of Freedom" by Tim Hardin entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #81; and on August 24th, 1969 it peaked at #50 {for 2 weeks} and spent 7 weeks on the Top 100...The song was composed by Bobby Darin, and Bobby made the Top 100 twice with songs composed by Tim Hardin; "If I Were A Carpenter" {peaked at #8 for 2 weeks on October 30th, 1966} and "The Lady Came From Baltimore" {reached #62 for 2 weeks on April 23rd, 1967}..."Simple Song of Freedom" was Tim Hardin's only Top 100 record...R.I.P. Mr. Hardin, born James Timothy Hardin, {1941 - 1980} and Mr. Darin, born Walden Robert Cassotto, {1936 - 1973}...

This song accompanied me me since 40 years. When you listen carefully to Tim,s voice you will hear the tragedy of his short live and the real messages allotted to the world for peace and freedom.I love you Tim. Rest in peace.
