"I'll stay on the bus, forget about us, put the blame on meeee...just tie a yellow ribbon round that ole oak tree..." I didn't have a great childhood in some important ways. But this song? We had a player piano in our basement. This was 1 of the piano rolls and I played it, over and over again, pumping the piano with my growing child feet. I can hear the sound of the piano roll winding back into itself at the end of the song.

I remember when i use to wear bell bottoms during that time. Girls went crazy for Tony Orlando. He even had a show like Sonny and Cher.

Even the bus is beautiful not like the European shit i drive these days. They were real American buit quality with a road ranger box. Great song.

The lyrics mention "prison". But, I believe the popularity of this song was really a result of the times. This song became wildly popular shortly after the end of the VietNam War. Conscripts, or draftees, to the U.S. Military Service were obligated to three years of military service. Some draftees felt they were imprisoned by the laws of conscription.

I had always thought this song was about someone getting out of prison. Then I was told it was about a civil war vet returning home; i guess that makes more sense she couldn't write back, but it doesn't explain the reference to the bus.
