Although nowadays when people in music circles say emo they usually mean the 90s bands like Braid, SDRE, Mineral, Christie Front Drive, Jimmy Eat World, etc. and bands of a similar style (only a few could be called post-hardcore though). It's just when it broke into the mainstream that people started calling every new pop punk/alt rock/post-hardcore act emo and it became a derogatory term.
