take a look at system of a down... (they are old... they are hard as fuck). I disagree. I think bands change over time, it's more guided by their music influences, which change over time..imho. Of coarse, there is always sell outs who change to conform to record company pressures... and even though I don't like any thrice after "artist in the ambulance"... I still would put them in the first catagory, not the second.

Your musical taste will shift slowly over time and as a musician, you will want to explore different music and see what you can do. I can't listen to any Thrice after The Artist In The Ambulance. I don't know if it's because I'm 28 years old and their old stuff got me through a lot of hard times, or if they did actually get shitty.
