Thrice is a band that a lot of times seems to have "the perfect drumbeat" in my opinion. The drummer Riley Breckenridge has come up with a ton of cool beats throughout his career with Thrice. A lot of songs call for straight ahead beats but sometimes there can be something a little more interesting that still fits. I call it "rhythmically melodic." There's a couple different ones in this song, 'Blur." Check out the beat at about 1:06 (same beat comes in at 2:27). -Robin Thrice - Blur - Red Bull Studio Sessions

I'm a fan of Thrice, and what you said is true. However you need to listen to math-rock bands perform live. Toe, Lite, Enemies, This Town Needs Guns, the list goes on. Excellent live performances and very technical song structures.

I think Thrice is one of the greatest bands ever, but I guess you haven't listened to many progressive bands, namely Coheed or Between the Buried and Me.

Well Radiohead has a lot of challenging time signatures.

Yeah, I was kind of emotional when I wrote that comment. Of course there are other bands (although few) who can write in unusual signatures and pull it off well. I'm not too fond of Tool personally though. (:

Yes, indeed they do. I was feeling very emotional when I wrote that comment, so I may have exaggerated a bit on the uniqueness of their talent.

Or Radiohead or Dream Theater or Rush or Protest the Hero, etc. I read that Riley listed his biggest influence as Radiohead.

I love thrice but "the only band that can actually write and play technically challenging time signatures" is a very bold statement. Have you listened to Tool at all?

Eddie often uses a Gibson Grabber. He built this particular bass (I can't remember if it was around Beggars or Major/Minor), which is based on the Grabber design. I am also failing to recall what pickup he said he put into it, but I'm pretty sure it's whatever Gibson uses in the Grabbers. Sorry, that's kind of vague but hope it helps. (He's also running through an Line 6 M-13 pedal board).

As I understand it Eddie actually builds his own bass. I can't tell what he is playing here, but it is documented that on a majority thier recordings he is playing a homemade instrument.

Gibson Grabber bass. I believe his other one is a Gibson Ripper.

Can somebody please tell me what bass Eddie is playing? It's absolutely gorgeous.

I'm glad someone else said it. I'm a die hard Tool fan and I have equal love for Thrice. If ever a day came that the two bands split a venue and played back to back... good God. What a beautiful event it would be. 'anthology' and 'lateralus'. It'd be historic.
